A patent is generally issued only for a fixed term, and it cannot be extended. For example, a utility patent is issued for up to 20 years, which comes into effect from the date of first filing of application.
But there may be some exceptions. USPTO can extend the date in case there are delays in examining the application or if there are for some delays in the regulatory process. The term can be reduced in case of the use of various disclaimers by applicants, especially during the prosecution process.
However, the protection terms can be extended if you invent an improvement of your existing process or product and patent it, but the protection is provided only for the improvements.
Since the new patent is granted for the improvement of your existing patent, it will protect only the subject matter disclosed in the improvements and not the original invention. Once the patent term of your original invention expires, others get the right to copy and use it without getting your permission.
