Well, anyone who has invented a new product or process, etc., can apply for a patent. It helps get full ownership of the invention and prevents its misuse. Once you get the patent rights, it makes you entitled to use your invention commercially and thus paves the way for earning.

You can apply for a patent as a company or as an individual. Moreover, there may be some limitations if an inventor in an employee. Under employment agreement terms, employee may need to assignee patent rights to the employer. As an employee, you may still be an inventor, but your employer may be the owner of the patent depending upon the terms and conditions of the employment.
