Introduction:
Let us start with the definition of Intellectual Property (IP). It refers to the creations of the human mind which may include new ideas, artistic or literary work, designs, brand names, etc.
Now, let us assume, if you are a creator of any of the above IPs, you can protect them in India or other countries. You will get the IP rights only in the country where it is protected. For example, if you are protecting your IPs in India, you will get the rights in India only and not in other countries. In case you want to protect them in other countries, you need to register them in other countries as well.
Almost every country has its IP portal to perform IP related activities. For India, you can perform IP India online search at the IP India website www.ipindia.gov.in. You may perform different types of IP related activities or IP India public search for the following:
1. Online registration for different types of IPs such as Patent, Trademark, Industrial Design, etc.
2. Online status check of filed or registered IPs
3. Patent search to know about the similar filed or granted patents
4. Trademark search to know about the similar Trademark filed or registered
IP India search website is also known as InPASS which stands for Indian Patent Advanced Search System. It helps you to track patents based on the filing date, publication date, grant date, etc. It also helps you to conduct a patent search. There are different options available to perform the searches such as keyword-based search, search through application number, search through publication number, etc.

IP India online search website allows you to check the status of the patent application. You need to enter the application number of the patent in the 'Application Status' tab. Once you enter the application number, you need to enter a displayed code and click on 'Show Application Status'. The result will display the following:
IP India online search also helps you to view all the documents uploaded for the patent application in the 'View Documents' tab provided at the bottom page of the result. IP India public search website is a freely available database for performing different types of IP searches such as Patent search, Trademark search, etc.
Also, when you are performing different types of searches such as Novelty search, Prior art search, Freedom to Operate Search, etc., you can perform searches for the published or granted patents through IP India public search portal.
Further, you can perform the Trademark Search on the IP India public search before the filing of Trademark applications in India for the wordmark, Logo and Device mark, etc., you can check if the mark(s) is available for you or not.
When you are performing a Trademark search and you find any similar Trademark filed or registered, you may choose a different mark for Trademark filing.
The purpose of the IP India online search website is to give a single platform to the user for performing various IP activities. But, if you are looking for IPs filing in any country other than India, then either you need to perform the searches on the country-specific IP website or you can perform on the paid database.
For example, for US patents, you may perform free search on the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website. For European patents, you may perform free search on the European Patent Office (EPO) website. Similarly, almost every country has its IP website where one can perform free searches.
Now, there are few paid databases are also available where you can perform searches for many countries and these paid databases provide you the translated versions of the Patent applications. Many countries accept patent applications in their language. Therefore, in a situation where you have to perform a global or country-specific search then you may choose to perform on the paid databases, or you may consult the IP service provider who can perform these searches on behalf of you on the paid database.
